Sustainable Living in Reston, VA

happy dawg at the garden

Happy Dawg watches as Rick works on our plot. She loves the garden.

The summer of 2011 we had our first garden plot at our community garden in Reston. It was a 10×10 space, and boy did it produce for us! I had the best lettuces, kale, spinach, tomatoes and peppers of my life. Rick had a wonderful time tending it, and we both realized we loved the notion of growing our own food. So, when we had the opportunity to move over to a 20×20 garden plot, Rick jumped on the opportunity.

Duck a l’Orange

duck a l'orange

Duck a l'Orange, frittes, and beans...very French.

I’ve been trying to get this post written and up for a few weeks now. Crazy how time flies when life is insane. But better late than never!

When I read about the Maple Avenue Market in my local paper, I knew I had to figure out a way to shop there. That’s not as dramatic as it seems: it’s only about a 10 to 15 minute drive, so very doable. The owners are just normal people who had big jobs and found farming more fulfilling. They work a small piece of land in Great Falls, VA, source from local vendors, and have the cutest little market ever.

Hot Dogs and Health

Jon Stewart did a very funny piece on the negative health impacts of hot dogs. I'm not sure how serious this is, but it's pretty funny and hopefully gets people thinking about what they're eating. While I don't think hot dogs are on par with cigarettes, I also don't think they're the best nutritional choice to make. And certainly a hot dog a day is not a great idea. I rarely eat them, but had one at my nephew's birthday party. I immediately bloated up. That's probably not a good sign.
